A photogram is a photographic shot made without camera and object lens. It is generated simply by arranging objects and their shadow on the photographic paper during exposure. This is a very early photographic technique. Despite this simple process with even simpler means there is considerable leeway for creative experiments and abstract compositions. The American artist and photographer Man Ray a.k.a. Emmanuel Radnitzky (1890-1976) created some quite remarkable works in this field. In reference to his name he called them “rayographs“.
